No finer merino wool base layer for women than these!,
I use merino wool base layers primarily for extra warmth in a cool home and for work outdoors during the cold months. If the temperature is at 40 degrees or below, I usually am wearing them at home.
These bottoms are far superior to the women’s midweight bottoms made by Icebreaker, Ibex (Long Janes), and SmartWool. The wool is thicker, the feel is divinely soft, and the cut is superb for me. These bottoms actually look good, as a pair of jeans or ski pants, when on alone. I am tall and slender with a 34″ inseam, so I bought these in a women’s large (just for the longer inseam) and compared them to a women’s large from the other manufacturers of women’s merino wool bottoms listed above. Compared to the Ibex and SmartWool, the Minus 33 bottoms have a smaller waistband (by almost 2″), a much longer inseam (by at least 2″), and a narrower cut through the hips. So, they are a perfect fit for me (albeit not skin tight on me in a large size)! Also, the gusseted crotch is very well done and is more comfortable than those of the other brands. In fact, were a woman to have a quite large behind area, these bottoms would expand perfectly to fit but, otherwise, have no excess material bagging around on women with smaller behind areas — I have yet to figure out how the designer who cut these bottoms figured out how to do this, but the result is an amazing fit. The elastic waistband on these bottoms is covered and is stronger and thicker than the waistbands on the bottoms of the other brands. The waistband sits perfectly a bit below the waist — not too high and not too low for most types of pants worn over them. Finally, these bottoms are far warmer than the others, even more so than the SmartWool 250 g/m 2 midweight bottoms!
I have three “cons”: (1) The cuffs at the hems are narrow bands and not fully ribbed cuffs, but the legs nonetheless stay in place and do not ride up under the pants worn over them. (2) They are made only in black, and I would like to have a pair in a natural or light grey color. (3) Minus 33 probably does not give a lifetime guarantee on its women’s bottoms, while Ibex and SmartWool most likely will (e.g., important if those “little holes” happen to develop in the wool a year or so after one begins wearing the garment).
What cinches my recommendation of Minus 33 midweight bottoms for women is the fact that they cost only a little over half of what the competitor brand midweight bottoms cost and still have the finest overall quality! I hope that my rave review will not inspire Minus 33 to raise its price. Any women in search of very warm merino wool long underwear, versatile for so many purposes during the cold months, should choose only this brand!

|Gave these as a gift,
I gave these as a gift to someone who lives in a metro area and rides her bicycle or takes the train everywhere (no car needed). These are super-soft and keep her warm but still look cool when she wears them with a skirt!

|cozy,
I have these merino wool leggings that I use as is or under other pants when temps dip and I’m going to be out walking, etc for any length of time. They are warm, fit well, are soft enough and so cozy to sleep in as well. I followed instructions on washing and drying and am very pleased with the results. A bit on the expensive side, but I could not find anything cheaper that offered the warmth of these. I have really lived in them over the winter, so I feel they did turn out to be a good deal!
