It depends on the season. I use nylon, then wool, then fleece when it’s really cold (under 20F). In the summer I prefer polypropylene or nylon under cotton.
Cotton and wool both hold water. You’ll have to change your outer socks when they get too wet. (always have extra socks in your pack) There are many acrylic, polyester, and natural materials that are good as a wicking base layer. If you want warmth, try silk as a base layer. If you want to cool your feet, try nylon under a light acrylic and wear well vented shoes/boots.
No one combo will keep your feet "bone dry" after a 5 mile hike. Try different combos and see what works best for you. Everyone has different perspiration issues, if yours is sweating feet, look into "vented insoles" they let a little more air circulate under your feet, when wearing well vented boots.
