Just wear whatever’s comfortable for you. I personally don’t like socks that come above my ankle bone, but some people prefer longer ones to prevent blisters. As for shoes, my favorite brand is Asics. I’ve tried Mizuno, Nike, New Balance, and Adidas, but Asics are definitely the best. They last a really long time(mine go 6 months, while the others only went 3 or 4) & can take a lot of miles, plus they fit well and are comfortable and padded. Other than that, just try different kinds and see what you like. Everyone has different preferences.
I have to admit, shaving a full minute off a mile in a matter of months is really hard, and may result in injury because you overworked yourself. I would say do tempo, fast-paced & shorter runs two day a week with sprints following the run. Those days you can work on running form and technique. The other three days, you should run longer and a bit slower, to work on endurance. Stretch well after your runs- it’s the most important time to stretch.

Buy socks that don’t have any cotton in them at all. I bought these really nice comfy socks, they’re made of bamboo, nylon, polyester, and some other stuff, but just make sure there’s no cotton in them b/c it holds up moisture causing blisters and runner’s foot. Also, I just bought Saucony running shoes at Dick’s sporting goods. I tried them on with Asics which are also really nice, but the Saucony were a bit cheaper and everyone there said they’re just as good. I LOVE them though, the best shoes I’ve ever had.
To get faster, run 2-5 miles everyday or every other day (the days in between, do fartlek or sprints) and use the weekends to recover: 10 min walk, 10 min jog, 10 min walk. Good luck!

I love Smart Wool Super Light Weight Socks. They are comfortable and absorbent. My feet never feel wet. Shoes depend on your feel. Do you have a flat foot, high arch, low arch? Do you pronate or supinate? I would go to a running store. I have a high arch and I pronate. I wear the BOA by North Face.
